Department of Environmental Sciences
VDU Department of Environmental Studies is an academic and research unit where knowledge of ecology, environmental protection, and sustainability is combined with practical research. Students deepen their understanding of natural processes and human impact on the environment, participate in project activities, and engage in international collaborations. Studies at the department develop analytical thinking and encourage an active approach to solving current environmental challenges, while graduates are prepared to work in both the private and public sectors – from waste management to climate policy development.
Moreover, in the 2025 field-of-study rankings published by Reitingai magazine, the Environmental Science study field at Vytautas Magnus University ranked first among Lithuanian universities at both bachelor’s and master’s levels, confirming its leadership in terms of study quality, graduate employability, employer evaluation, and research performance criteria.
In addition, in the QS European University Rankings (2026) “QS World University Rankings: Europe”, Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) ranked 251st among almost a thousand European universities and was among the top 100 in Northern Europe.
The Department of Environmental Sciences supervises the Bachelor’s study programme “Environmental Sciences and Protection” and the Master’s study programme “Environmental Management” and “Industrial Ecology”.
Department staff has solid teaching experience combined with scientific work. Staff participates in numerous national and international research and study projects in the field of environment and related topics.
