Let’s Celebrate September 1st Together!
Like every year, on September 1st, Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) invites the entire university community – students, lecturers, and employees – to celebrate the beginning of the new academic year together. This time, the celebrations of September 1st will begin with the Freshman Pledge and welcoming speeches on 11.30 a.m. at the courtyard of the Historical Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania in Kaunas (Vilniaus g. 33).
The VMU community will take over some of the most beautiful spaces of the city: at 12 p.m., following the festive meeting, a massive procession will make its way from the courtyard of the Presidential Palace to the Town Hall Square of Kaunas. The crowd will be joined by the Ąžuolynas Wind Orchestra.
Celebrations of the new academic year will also coincide with the end of the special introductory program dedicated to first-year students (Įvadas į studijas VDU 2018) but the September 1st’s festivities are dedicated to not just the new but also all other VMU students as well. The day’s events will culminate with a free concert by Baltasis Kiras in the Town Hall Square. The performance will be dedicated to the students of VMU and Kaunas as well as the city residents and guests. The concert is scheduled for 12.10 p.m.
Holy Mass for the academic community will be held on Monday, 3 September, 12 p.m., at the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica of Apostles St Peter and St Paul (Vilniaus g. 1).
Baltic Summer University 2018 officially opened
On July 9, Vytautas Magnus University has welcomed the first participants of Baltic Summer University (BSU) who have started a 5-week-long Summer Internship Programme (SIP), which is going to last from July 9 until August 10.
SIP offers a practical opportunity for students to gain professional knowledge of their chosen field and get to know the modern Lithuania. The participants will first attend events of the introductory week at VMU, which includes lectures delivered by university professors on the current affairs of Lithuania and a special cultural programme.
Internship placements for the students are provided based on their chosen fields. Opportunities are offered to do internship at workplaces or institutions which are social partners of VMU, including Kaunas City Municipality, various NGOs.
The participants are not required to speak Lithuanian or have Lithuanian origin: anyone interested in this country and looking for a useful way to spend summer is welcome. Students who successfully end their internship and defend the final project are awarded 6 academic credits (ECTS).
The opening of SIP will be followed by BSU Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Course opening on July 16 and a series of BSU’s Creativity, Culture and Communication (3Cs) courses to open on July 30. Registration to the 3Cs courses is still open until 20 July for students who do not need visa and special late bird fees are still applicable.
4th international Life Sciences Baltics forum
For the 4th time international Life Sciences Baltics forum will gather more than 1500 industry players in Vilnius on September 26-27, 2018. The goal of the event is to connect business and science, discuss the best new research and trends in the field of life sciences – biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Apply Now: BA and MA Degree Studies at VMU (Extended Deadline)
Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) Faculty of Natural Sciences welcomes international students to apply for 3 Bachelor and 4 Master degree study programmes in the English language. Application deadline for studies in the 2018/2019 academic year has been extended to 15 July. Application submissions have to be sent online.
This year VMU offers a wide range of study programmes in the English language, including interdisciplinary, joint, international programmes with foreign partners and others. The programmes are taught in Kaunas or Vilnius. Applications and admissions are managed by the International Cooperation Department.
BA study programmes in Biology and Genetics, Biotechnology, Environmental Science and Ecology.
MA level, students can apply for Applied Biotechnology, Environmental Management, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Master Industrial Ecology.
State Grants for Full-Time MA Studies
The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania has opened a call for applications for 70 Lithuanian state grants funding full-time Master degree or Integrated studies at Lithuanian higher education institutions in the academic year 2018/2019. The funding under the Call shall be provided to the nationals of the Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Japan, China, South Korea and Israel and foreigners of Lithuanian origin.
All approved candidates will receive a monthly scholarship of 380 euros for the whole duration of the studies. The cost of the full-time MA degree studies will be covered (up to the limit not exceeding the national standard cost of studies) only for the nationals of the Ukraine, Belarus and Georgia and foreign citizens of Lithuanian origin.
Apply now for accommodation during your studies at VMU
Vytautas Magnus University has opened the application for accommodation during the academic year 2018/2019 for all current and incoming full-time, Erasmus+, Bilateral or other exchange students, except for students, who are planning to come and study at VMU in Spring semester of academic year 2018/2019.
In order to apply, students must complete an online application form until June 10th, 2018. Students who make false statements or provides insufficient information, will lose their right to be accommodated at VMU or ASU (partner university) dormitories.
Until June 29th, 2018 students will be personally informed about the results of the competition, by receiving an email to their personal mailbox.
Conditions of Accommodation
International students of 2018/2019 will be accommodated in:
- VMU Dormitory No. 2, “Baltija” (Vytauto pr. 71), which is located in the city center (Vytauto pr. 71, Kaunas) close to the university. More information about dormitory and living conditions, you can find here

- Dormitories No. 5 or No. 7 of the partner University, Aleksandras Stulginskis university. It is located in Kaunas district (Studentų g. 5, Akademija), which is ~15 minutes away (by public transport) from the city center. More information about dormitory and living conditions, you can find here
Conditions of application for accommodation
Allocation of residences will be determined by 3 main criteria:
- Student’s social status:
- for orphans;
- for students with special needs (after taking into consideration current level of disability). Accommodation of an accompanying person is possible after reaching an agreement with the Director of the Office of Student Affairs;
- for students from families who raising four or more children, who are studying at school or are students in higher education institutions;
- Students who are arriving to study at the university for the first time

Intermedix Lietuva Scholarship Competition for VMU Students
For a second year in a row, Vytautas Magnus University is cooperating with UAB Intermedix Lietuva to offer seven one-time scholarships of 200 EUR to third/fourth year BA or first/second year MA students with higher academic achievements (grade average for the previous semester must be 9 or higher) and strong involvement in social and public activities within the university and beyond.
Students wishing to participate in the competition for the Intermedix Lietuva scholarship have to submit the following documents to studentas@vdu.lt until May 31st, 2018:
- Free-form letter of motivation for the scholarship;
- A resume (Curriculum Vitae) and (or) description of activities within the University and beyond.
Scholarships will be awarded to the best students in the following fields:
1 scholarship – Humanities;
1 scholarship – Arts;
2 scholarships – Social Sciences;
2 scholarships – Technologies;
1 scholarship – Physical Sciences and Biomedicine.
The decision regarding the awarding of the scholarships will be made by a commission, which will consist of representatives from Intermedix Lietuva and Vytautas Magnus University. In the absence of appropriate candidates in a specific field of studies, scholarship may be reallocated to other fields of studies.
Intermedix Lietuva scholarships will be awarded in a ceremony by the end of the spring semester of the 2017/2018 academic year.

Registration for Summer Accommodation in VMU Dormitory
International graduates of 2017-2018 academic year and all international students wishing to live in the VMU Dormitory No. 2 (Vytauto pr. 71) for the summer period (July 1st – August 14th) have to fill in the online registration form until 17th of June.
Please note that VMU has a very limited number of accommodation places in the dormitories during the summer. For this reason, accommodation will be provided only to those students who will submit an electronic registration form correctly and as soon as possible.
The students will be personally informed about the provided accommodation places by email until June 20th, 2018. Messages will be sent to the personal addresses provided during the registration.
International graduates of 2017-2018 academic year and students from other higher education institutions who will be provided accommodation in the dormitories of VMU will have to pay accommodation fees for the whole period (from July 1st until August 14th) in advance, before the 1st of July. The prices of accommodation services during the summer period will be applied in accordance with the Rector’s ruling.
